BMW’s Z4
BMW’s Z4 has a controversial appearance that tends to divide opinion quite sharply, but there’s no disputing that this is a charming and capable roadster, with enough space inside and enough power under the hood to thoroughly entertain its driver. It has been around since 2003, but we shouldn’t forget just how much more rigid and roomy this car is compared with its predecessor. It again comes with a choice of two engines: the surprisingly sweet 184-hp, 2.5-liter inline six, and the predictably punchy 225-hp, 3.0-liter inline six. Along with manual and automatic transmissions, the SMG six-speed is also available, but only in the 3.0-liter model for 2005, and the Sport package is required. Light poplar wood trim is now a no-charge option on all models, the 2.5i gets standard cruise control and fog lights, and the 3.0i has standard automatic climate control.

Chevrolet Corvette
Chevrolet Corvette

With supercar performance at a mere-mortal price, the Chevrolet Corvette is easily the best sports-car value in its class. The sixth-generation coupe and convertible squeeze 400 horsepower from their standard 6.0-liter V-8s, and then add superlative handling and stopping power to the mix.

The Corvette is also surprisingly easy to live with: It has generous cargo space, a forgiving, comfortable ride -- even some fuel economy, with a 28-mpg highway rating. This year, the Z06 model mates a 500-horsepower V-8 with technology usually limited to $150,000-to-$600,000 cars, including weight savers like an all-aluminum chassis and carbon-fiber bodywork.

It adds up to a 198-mph top speed and a 3.6-second blast from 0 to 60 mph. It also costs only $65,000 -- $105,000 less than the cheapest Ferrari.

Sport Cars
The Maserati GranSport Spyder, presented at the 61st Frankfurt Motorshow in 2005, adds to the range of GranSport models, taking its place alongside the coupé version.

The enormous success enjoyed by the GranSport convinced Maserati to dazzle its sportier and more passionate clients with a cabrio version. This new model is altogether more aggressive and the driving experience is enhanced by the drop-top hood.

From a technical point of view, the car’s engine is an evolution of the power unit fitted to the GranSport. The 4244 cm³ V8 engine delivers 452 Nm of maximum torque. The bodywork features aerodynamic and stylistic touches that differentiate it from the traditional Spyder.

The GranSport Spyder will be available from March 2006 and will substitute the existing Spyder.
